Compassion and Solidarity: A bilingual anthology of Indonesian Writing

November 2009 -

This anthology features twenty Indonesian authors who attended the Ubud Writers & Readers Festival (UWRF) in 2009. Developing a sustainable platform through which the emerging writers of Indonesia could have a greater opportunity to voice their thoughts and opinions to the global audience has always been one of UWRF's core objectives.

Selecting the most promising emerging writers and inviting them to attend and speak at the festival have been perceived as the first critical step in achieving that objective. Translating their work and publishing it in a bilingual anthology (English and Bahasa Indonesia) was the next critical step. The anthology makes the works accessible to the English-speaking readers, thus, furthering the effort to introduce the writers to the global stage.

This anthology reflects diverse genres, topics and esthetic expressions. It speaks about a colorful and vibrant literary landscape, which would never fail to amaze its readers with its poignant narration of the contemporary issues that haunt us as an individual as well as a citizen of a country.

Read the short story João, by Indonesian writer and psychologist Nelden Djakababa, and the poem Field Lines by Esha Tegar Putra, poet and journalist from Sumatra.

Compassion and Solidarity: A bilingual anthology of Indonesian Writing was the result of a collaboration between UWRF and Hivos. The anthology can be ordered at info@ubudwritersfestival.com.
