I held auditions in Costa Rica and picked some members of the Theater Magos del Tiempo group. Together, we have created the Corazón de Café production.'

Chirikure: 'I assert my right to express myself'

Chirikure Chirikure draws strength from the cultural history of his country, Zimbabwe, which currently stands on the brink of economic and political ruin. This poet, writer, singer and organiser has had to deal with physical threats both direct and indirect, as his son has been threatened too. Nevertheless, Chirikure says: 'The age-old Shona tales, the music, the carvings, the language - I draw strength from these to carry on.

In Columbia, from 24 June through 2 July 2005, the 15th International Poetry Festival of Medellín will be held. During this event, 80 poets from 52 countries will read their work. Interest in the declamations is overwhelming: more than 100,000 people will be coming to list in theatres, parks, hospitals, prisons and city squares.

Orquesta de la Papaya puts on first pan-Central American concert tour

After three years of appearances at popular and well-respected festivals in America and Europe, last month the Orquesta de la Papaya was finally able to fulfil its fondest wish: from 2 to 17 April the orchestra was able to put on a series of concerts in five Central American countries.
