Introduction

Jan Pronk, Minister of Development Cooperation, and Aad Nuis, Minister of Education, Culture and Science in the Dutch government are the initiators of the 'Power of Culture' conference that was held on 8 and 9 November 1996 in Amsterdam's Berlage Bourse. Basis for conference discussions was the Commission's report 'Our Creative Diversity'. Both ministers support the objectives outlined in the report and see the conference as an opportunity for representatives from the world of art, science, ethics and media to its findings. Because of the variety of themes broached in the report the conference will focus on three specific aspects:
