Post Cultuur: Nederlandse ambassades met budget voor cultuur en ontwikkeling

JAAP VEERMAN: "The Netherlands and Surinam have a shared history of over 300 years. Both countries have a lot in common in terms of culture, not in the least the Dutch language. Cooperation in the field of joint cultural heritage is growing and the number of cultural exchanges is still on the increase. However, the preconditions for cultural expression in Surinam can still be improved. The embassy is working together closely with the Surinamese Culture Directorate, which is currently working on a multi-year plan for the cultural sector.

The embassy aims to create a distinct profile for itself in the field of culture, with multi-year and sustainable support for large-scale activities. Promoting Dutch art and culture as well as strengthening local organizations have also become more important.

It is important for Surinamese purveyors of culture to broaden their horizons. That is why we assist in setting up contacts with organizations in the Netherlands and encouraging contacts within the region.

We have been involved in many projects over the last few years. For example, the renovation of the Nola Hatterman Institute was completed in 2005. This is an easily accessible institute for young artists and school children who can come here to find out more about visual arts. We are now working on the development of a multi-year educational programme for pupils of the Institute, organized by teaching staff from the Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam. After passing their exams here, students can continue their professional training at the Rietveld Academy in the Netherlands.

The Back Lot Foundation organizes a bi-annual international film and documentary festival and workshops on film making, technology and journalism. Its major ambition is to put Surinam on the map as the audiovisual centre of the Caribbean."
