Mountain Voices

The United Nations has declared 2002 the Year of the Mountains. Mountain inhabitants miss out on many economic initiatives. On the eve of the Year of the Mountains the Panos Institute (London) launched a unique online archive with stories by mountain inhabitants themselves. This includes interviews with more than 300 people, from all parts of the world, living in mountains or on plateaus. Their stories provide a personal look at changes and developments in the areas. There are conversations with people from Nepal, Peru, Kenya, the Ethiopian and Lesotho highlands, India, Mexico, China and Pakistan. Web site visitors must first register before they can read the complete interviews.
